The season of witnessing in the background is not punishment but preparation for leadership

Just because God has you in the background, it doesn't mean that God is not working on you, that God does not have God's hand upon you. In fact, it is precisely in those years where it seems like no one's looking and it seems like no one's listening, that God is doing God's most intimate work of preparing you for what God has in store for you to do.
